Rules of the Road

The following Rules of the Road are compiled each year via mailings to state/provincial highway departments and/or police departments. Some changes may have been made since this data was compiled. For additional regulations not addressed in this section, we suggest that you contact the state or provincial agency listed. While every attempt has been made to check this information, the Good Sam Campground Directory cannot guarantee its accuracy, and assumes no responsibility for errors and omissions. ALABAMA

Alabama RV Safety Requirements

At 3,000 lbs.: trailer brakes, flares and breakaway switch.

Wipers on/headlights on. Right turn on red permitted unless posted otherwise. All front-seat occupants must use seat belts; children under age 3 must be in child-restraint safety seats; ages 3-6 must wear seat belts.

Alaska RV Safety Requirements:

Alaska Driving Laws:

Headlight use is required on designated highways. Right turn on red permitted unless posted otherwise. All passengers must wear seat belts; child-restraint safety seats are required for children up to age 4.

Riding is allowed in truck campers if passengers are seat-belted; in fifth-wheel trailers with safety glass and an audible or visual device connected with the tow vehicle, plus at least one exit must be able to be opened from both outside and inside the trailer. Vehicles towing trailers or dinghies are restricted to the right-hand lane. Overnight parking in rest areas is not allowed.

California RV Safety Requirements:

Over 1,500 lbs.: trailer brakes, breakaway switch and safety chains. All power-brake systems require a breakaway switch. Chains may be required during winter months on mountain roads.

California Driving Laws:

Right turn on red permitted, unless posted otherwise (but not on red arrow). At least two/three riders for the carpool lane as posted.

Chains or snow tires required when posted. Trailers over 3,000 lbs.: trailer brakes and breakaway switch.

Colorado Driving Laws:

At least two riders for the carpool lane. Firearms may be transported and loaded or unloaded anywhere in a vehicle except on one’s person.

It is unlawful for a person to have an open container of an alcoholic beverage within the passenger area of a motor vehicle while on a highway; however, this does not apply to the living quarters of a motorhome or travel trailer.

Open propane cylinders are not allowed while traveling on open highways. New Jersey Turnpike: Motorhome may tow a vehicle as long as all four wheels are on the ground; no tow dollies or piggybacks. Garden State Parkway: Motorhome may tow another vehicle with tow bar, safety chains, and emergency tail lights on both vehicles.

Ontario RV Safety Requirements

Over 3,000 lbs./1,360 kg. brakes are required. Safety chains are required unless the trailer is attached by a fifth-wheel attachment.

Ontario Driving Laws

Driver and all passengers are required to wear seat belts. Children up to 9 kg./20 lbs. and under 26 in./66 cm. must be secured in a rearward-facing child restraint system secured by the seat-belt assembly. Children between 20-40 lbs./9-18 kg. and over 26 in./66 cm. must be secured in a child-restraint system secured by the seat-belt assembly and a tether strap. Children over 40 lbs./18 kg. can use a booster seat secured by the seat-belt assembly. Radar detection and jamming devices are prohibited.
