Pueblo KOA Journey Good Sam Verified Campground

This was the only place I could make reservations in the Colorado Springs area so close to July 4 and took the only site left, a premium. It's not inexpensive but the site is very nice. This was the only place I could make reservations in the Colorado Springs area so close to July 4 and took the only site left, a premium. It's not inexpensive but the site is very nice. The gravel is level enough we didn't need to put boards under the jacks. We love the big patio and Adirondack chairs. The tree doesn't provide much shade and it was close to 100o the last two days. The staff is very friendly. We don't use the public shower/restroom facilities so I won't comment. There are some big negatives concerning this KOA. First, trying to get into the place is a white knuckler! Coming northbound you drive through a narrow one way tunnel marked 13'3". We drove on and made a southbound u-turn to discover an impossible hairpin turn into the driveway immediately off the exit ramp. Second, this KOA is not far off I-25 and the traffic noise is awful all day/night long. And then there are the trains. If we come back this way again I'd prefer not to stay here because of the access and the road noise.

THE GREAT: Wonderful price for a Friday one-night visit, with ease of access to the pull through site from the office making things painless. Very friendly staff both the day of arrival and the morning of departure. THE GOOD: Awesome park. Clean sites that include FHU and cable service. There is daily garbage pickup, if you place the trash at the foot of your site by 10AM. The site we had was not 100% level, but the gravel surface was groomed and even, without holes or dips or gullies. Had to place blocks beneath our curbside tires which made the first step into the rig a bit high. We built a "landing pad" at the base of our steps to alleviate this issue. THE SO-SO: making turns at the end of the rows of sites was not so well designed. Suggest you walk your "escape" route to set up your turn before hand. Some tricky obstacles to avoid on the east side of the park. Also, if you're sensitive to train whistles, be aware that there are two grade-crossing that are within earshot of the park and the trains are crossing all times. We like trains. Some people don't. THE BAD: when you come from NB I-25 to go to the park, you're immediately faced with a single lane tunnel that is about 10 ft wide and marked as 13' 3" high. When you come from SB I-25, the turn to get onto the frontage road to the KOA is a U-turn that is impossible for an RV. To the west is what appears to be commuter parking, and if this area is empty, it can be used as a U-turn point. OVERALL: we'd stay there again.

Arriving from the south, you leave the highway and need to turn left underneath the highway itself. The bridge is a single lane bridge marked as 13' 3". My advice, stay on the highway to the next exit, not much better but higher. OK, enough of the bad stuff. The park is very well kept, the staff are very friendly and always willing to help. On arrival you are escorted to your site, there is a nice trail for walking out of the camp although it is not that long. A nice bark park set away from the camp behind a storage area. The site we had was easy to get in and out of as a pull through, but not as wide as we would have liked. Our rear side awning touched the tree when opened fully. The camp is well located and within easy reach of both Pueblo (10 mins), and Colorado Springs (30 mins). If you just want to relax you also have a view of the mountains in the distance with Pikes Peak and it's snow cap prominent among them. A nice pool area is very well kept at the entrance. The highway is not far away and there is a small amount of noise, but not enough to bother about and there is a rail line that is well used the other side of the highway. Overall we enjoyed our 4 nights at Pueblo KOA. This camp is highly recommended!
