Our first trip to this resort was over the 4th of July Weekend. My wife and I decided to try a different camping resort this year. We have been visiting Old Orchard Beach for the past 6 years and wanted to experience a new campground. To start, the facilities a very clean and well maintained, there is so much to do when the grandkids visit. Great pools, wonderful theme weekends, clean bathrooms and a GREAT location. The Staff was very nice and very quick to help when asked. The trolly stop is convenient... Read More
Our first trip to this resort was over the 4th of July Weekend. The trolly stop is convenient and a very short trip to the beach. These are all great. Unfortunately, we did have some less than pleasant encounters to go with the positives. Our arrival and check in was smooth, the map included directions to our site and being first time visitors to the resort, they were needed. As we pulled around to the site as directed, we were surprised to see that half of the site we booked was used as parking for the seasonal sites across the street. The parked cars made it very challenging to swing our trailer into the site and I was concerned about hitting the car at the entrance to our site. My wife jumped out to ask the folks across the way if they could move their car. While they did move the car, they were very vocal about our "screw-up", we were supposed to do a loop around the section to come into the site. Apparently, we were the weekend riff-raff campers that don't know what we are doing. My wife did explain that we were following the directions we were given but they seemed indifferent. The rest of the weekend, it felt as if the cars were pulled forward as far as possible making if feel like they were right on top of us. I do not know what the parking rules are for the seasonal campers, BUT had I known that half of what appears on the map as our site was designated for seasonal parking, I would not have chosen the site. There was not much room for our truck and the site next door was so close, it felt like we were right on top of his W/S/E connections. They were very nice about it, and they even apologized when they had to drain their tanks.
I will not say that we are done with Powder Horn just yet, we did walk around to see if there are other, less crowded site options. The Campground is HUGE and it really does appear to be mostly seasonal. Full transparency, we really enjoy the other resort we have been using for the past 5 years and right now, I don't know if the facilities here are enough to change the destination for our yearly trip to OOB to Powder Horn. I want to stress that the resort is well maintained, clean and in a great location. We simply felt more like "outsiders" here than we have at any other resort on the southern coast of Maine. We like the variety of traveling around New England to experience different locations and have chosen NOT to go seasonal. This resort just had a vibe, we felt like we were looked down on because we were not part of the community.
Moving forward, I'd hope Powder Horn management would clarify the site map to designate what is the site AND what is parking for the other seasonal sites. I depend on the map when I choose our sites and pay the lock fee. I'd also ask that the employees at check in gives very clear instructions for new arrivals. We had NO CLUE that the narrow roadways in and out were all directional until were scolded by the seasonal camper. Yes, we would be willing to give Powder Horn a second try, but as of July 2024, they are not our top OOB destination. The overall cost was similar to our usual camping resort in the area. They do offer some nice activities that are INCLUDED in the price, and they are a much shorter trolly ride to the beach. But our initial encounter did make us feel a bit unwelcome, not something we typically experience camping. We really need to see if there will be a second try in 2025.
