When we saw the less than great reviews we were hesitant but High Plains was in the right place so we tried it. It was great! Friendly staff, full hookup for a great price and the pizza was amazing! Lots of birdsong drowned out the noise of the highway and in the morning lots of little white flowers. Convenient, friendly fast and cheap. Easy on/off I-70. Very large, level, well spaced sites with good utilities. Surrounded by cedar tree wind breaks, but no shade at individual sites. Our site, 121, was grass. No cable TV, but adequate OTA stations to monitor weather, etc. Onsite restaurant/pub serves excellent food in a relaxed and friendly (think: slow but fun) atmosphere. You are not allowed to use the campground shower house facilities if you have an RV with your own bathroom. You can beg to get the code and it will be reluctantly given if you have a valid reason (broken water heater in our case), but you are warned to never ever give that code to anyone. And you will receive a threat that "we have cameras everywhere, we KNOW what you are doing". The pool was being used but it's fully enclosed by fencing so we didn't see what condition it is in. The grounds are not well maintained, but the individual campsites are adequate regarding grass height. Stickers abound in the grass, but it's western Kansas in the summer. There is a large fenced dog park. This is a different sort of place, not really customer oriented. We would stay again for overnight. Location is good for visiting Little Jerusalem State Park and Monument Rocks as well as Lake Scott. Location and facilities have the potential to be a fantastic RV park.

This place was very disappointing! If you camp with pets DONT!!! The stickers on this property are absolutely absurd. You can not locate an area that does not have tons of stickers. Spent more time picking stickers out of our dogs feet than enjoying our time. In addition the facilities are very run down. Highly discourage anyone from ever camping at this campground. P.S Just look at the google reviews. Owner responses tell all about this facility.

This may have been a nice campsite at one time. The photos appear to have shown a beautiful campsite. We arrived to a worn out, tired camp ground. Very wind blown in years. Miniature golf had been replaced by Goats behind a fence and the pool and hot tub were MIA. Far from all of that and my biggest concern is the stickers they are everywhere. You cannot walk 2 inches without one in your foot. If you have a dog. Get some booties. They will need them. Every inch of the property has stickers. Dog... Read More

We stayed at this site for a night while traveling through the area. We gave it a three as it was very easy to find and access from the interstate. It was also convenient that they had a small pub/diner on site as there were no other eating establishments close by. The service was great and the food was good. The electrical box did have the correct outlet to fit our 50 amp cord. We are thankful we had an EMS as later in the evening it began tripping our breakers and causing our EMS to click constantly unless the A/C was on. We used a multi meter to check the voltage coming out of each leg of the site outlet. One leg was putting out 119 volts, while the other was putting out 135 volts. In an effort to keep from frying our equipment, we just unplugged from the outlet. Setting up at several campsites since then and our equipment worked perfectly so please be careful. We would not recommend staying at this campsite without some kind of surge protector/EMS.

I am unable to rate the restroom facilities since we did not use them. The one item that was not mention on Website but, is detailed in the policy and rules booklet we received from the clerk upon check in, "Stickers" the was bold and highlight in the rules and I mean LOTS of stickers So, many we could not let the dog out and had to be very careful walking around even on the gravel roadway. NOT a PET Friendly campsite. Should have just pulled over in a rest stop.

I called to make a reservation and was told to go online and make it because the owner was at Wal-Mart at the time. I understand that she does not have help and can't always be on-site so I did as she asked. When we arrived at the park I went in to register and stood and waited for her to have a private conversation with another person. She finally got around to me then somebody she knew walked in and asked for a stamp. She waited on that person while I continued to wait. Then she got around to the park rules and informed me that since we were in a fifth wheel we did not need access to the bathrooms. I explained that we needed to use the showers so she gave me the combination after a lot of hesitation and the warning that I was not to give it to anybody else and that there were video cameras all over the park and they would see anything that we do. When we went to use the shower we forgot to take the code (our fault). She had told us that if we needed anything to call rather than walking in the heat and wind so we stopped in the office and asked for the combination again. She asked what kind of rig we had and again told us that we have a bathroom in our rig so did not need to use the park bathroom. Again I explained that we needed the shower. Then she told me that she wrote it on the paper with the rules. At this point my husband said that we left it at the rig and thought we would stop in and get it rather than walking back. She finally gave it to us. The bathrooms were OK. In the women's room I used a toilet that then would not flush. The sink did not drain well. In the men's room there were two toilets that did not work but there were signs letting people know that they did not work. Although this has been a "go to" park for us when we were in this vicinity in the past, we will not likely return until we see that reviews by others who have stayed at the park are better.

We do not use the shower in our rig and when I explained why I was told the code for the shower but informed that I was not to tell it to anyone else and that there were security cameras all over the campground with one being by or in the bathroom. We didn't use their precious shower so don't know what it was like. Also asked about the restaurant next door and was told how terrible it was and that I should only use their Pub. We didn't try either so I can't review them but did notice lots of cars out front of the restaurant next door when we left the following morning so assumed that it wasn't as bad as I was told. All in all it was not a pleasant check-in and we won't be staying there again.

This is a privately owned and run campground, but their customer service approach does not help with return business or recommendations.

Basic campground. Could use more gravel on sites. I feel the current Good Sam rating is high for the actual situation. And the High Plains website appears to list even higher ratings than the current ones. The owner was pleasant when calling to reserve and checking in. However the list of rules - bolded and underlined- is excessive and not very welcoming. I have nothing against rules but could not believe that campers with bathrooms in their unit are not given access to the campground restrooms/showers.... Read More

We traveled with 2 little girls which makes for a crowded tiny camper bathroom, as are all camper bathrooms. Husband was finally allowed to use campground restroom when he explained that. Men's restroom was spotless but that's not surprising if no one gets to use them. This gives a very unfriendly perception. Next time we'll stop in Colby or Wakeeney, depending on which direction we are traveling.

I will start with, this was a very interesting experience. The good points: it was far enough off of I 70 the road noise was limited. We were lucky to have a spot in the back of the park which had a much better appearance with pine trees etc. (The front of the park does not have the same appeal, appears to have full time campers more cluttered and unappealing.) We had a very pleasant evening sitting outside with our dog. Much to our surprise the restaurant Captain Jack's was excellent! Great food, cold beer, nice wine all exceptionally priced. However, as stated in previous reviews, the manager was an interesting person. Not what you would typically expect for a warm and fuzzy greeting after a long drive or even a drive around the block. Her opening remarks began with the rules, rather than a welcome greeting. She was VERY firm about the rules! We had absolutely no problem with the rules nor would most other campers. However her delivery set an unpleasant tone which was unnecessary and unappreciated. The good news is we have a wonderful sense of humor so we actually chuckled about her crass customer service for most of the evening. So bottom line, our rating is a three star, would be higher for a one night stay if the manager had been more pleasant with her greeting.

The manager took my call and I explained our trip to her and (thought) I had secured a spot (OH HOW WRONG). The only thing she said was (In a very condescending voice was, this is a non smoking campground), I said, that's ok cause I can not smoke for one night. So, happy to have a spot we traveled to "High Plains" and pulled in about 4 PM in the evening in the rain and my wife got out to register us. The door was locked and a sign said to call, I did and was met with a surprise after I gave her my name and reason for the call, she simply said we had no reservations. Quite a shock! I ask if they had space and she said "I suppose, I'll be down in a minute". After a few minutes she showed up and came out of the office to talk, "I thought", but NO! she had to take her garbage to the trash instead of assisting a customer but needing a spot my wife went in to register. My wife came out rather miffed (MILD) and said she was given a lesson in Reservations and again after she understood also she said they had cameras and if we smoked or ran around naked they would see us. We got to our spot to find that other campers must have had an issue with her because there were butts on the ground (cigarette not human) around our spot and dog poop all over the park. The roads were horrible with pot holes and not graded. I believe the owner was the most uncooperative, unpleasant camp host we have ever encountered. I could go on and on about the sand burs, goats horns, etc. The place is a dump for a RV park. Good Sam PLEASE take High Plains OFF your list and save a lot of people a lot of problems. Sorry my review is so long but I could write another couple of chapters.

I am unable to rate the restroom facilities since we were told we couldnt use them. Only people with tents who didnt have a self contained bathroom could use them. And that there were security cameras in case we tried to use them. Ridiculous! This was the most expensive Good Sam Park we stayed in our entire month long trip out west and the least accommodating. Should have just pulled over in a rest stop.

So I can understand conducting business in order, first come-first served. But to finish a private conversation with another individual on the other side of the counter that had nothing to do with signing in a guest, or registering, but rather something to do with some event that occurred in the past and that is why she will not ask a 3rd individual not to come back to the event was down right rude to me standing there waiting. Then to ad salt to the wound she gave me the riot act when explaining the house rules, repeating those she thought were necessary. It gave me the impression she has had some past bad campers and was sure to let me know what not to do. She recommended the Pub. I tried it out. It took 21 minutes for the server to take my food order at the bar with only 2 tables occupied. Then took her time to ask me if I wanted another drink and instead of just pouring it she went to the tables then to the register before actually pouring it. So I'll tell you the food was okay, just okay, for frozen food. Oh yeah, it was quite warm in the pub and a bit uncomfortable. I find this CG is okay for an overnight stay, but I wouldn't plan a vacation around staying here.

But I did see the spa and it looked to be intended for the owners use only, plus you couldn't get close to it without the ownwer yelling at you to get away. Which brings me to the OWNER, my lord what a nasty person she is. We had been driving for 10 hours in high winds and when we got to this place we were read the riot act and not very nicely ether. We were given a set of RULES that we were told that if we broke any of them that they would call the POLICE AND HAVE US ARRESTED, REALLY. I just wanted to sit back and have a cigar nothing more. We were told that if we did they would call the POLICE. I was told I could go to the parking lot next door (dusty lot ) and smoke my cigar. And I did it was unbelievable. We decided to take a walk around before retiring for the evening, when the owner saw us walking around we were asked what we were doing, why were we there. she had just checked us in 2 hours earlier and we were 1 of maybe 5 overnighters staying there. THIS PLACE SUCKS, DONT STAY THERE. MY ADVISE TO THE OWNER IS TO SELL IT TO SOMEONE ELSE AND GET OUT OF THE BUSINESS. They treat there customers like they are the enemy. Im a business owner and I could never treat mt customers this was. SELL IT TO SOMEONE WHO KNOWS HOW TO TEAT PEOPLE. DONT STAY HERE.

As with most campgrounds we shoot for Memorial Day opening (ours opened on 6/2). Now about the mini golf, as I told you when you checked in, we are taking it out and putting parking in for our 5 star onsite restaurant, and making a larger dog park that is centrally located. It's been closed since last Labor Day and all references to it have been eliminated from all places we have control of. In reference to the hot tub in an enclosed gazebo, being read the riot act, that I would have you arrested for breaking rules or smoking on the property and that I accosted you when you were walking around ( I asked you if needed some assistance) , that would not be true, and is a lie. The Hot Tub is only for the campers use and many of them do. If the "riot act" is being told that this was a non-smoking park which meant you could smoke in your camper or vehicle, and explaining that we can't allow camp fires or charcoal grills and asked not to drive thru any other site but your own then I guess our definition of riot act differs. I'm sorry you were offended by the explanations (but I REALLY think it's because you were mad about our smoking policy, and your wife doesn't allow you to smoke in your RV. Finally as for trees, this is the high plains, we grow wheat here and tall shade trees don't do well in the high winds that we get here. In closing, I will say I'm sorry you were unhappy here with everything but I'm not going to change the smoking policy. We cater to happy people, so I would recommend that you get some help about your anger problem.

Only stayed 1 night but great place and very convenient. I wish we were staying longer! Miniature golf for the kids, swimming pool, hot tub, pub on site, family restaurant next door, fuel across the street, and very convenient access to the hwy. All sites are pull through so we didn't have to unhook. Only downside is they need to do a little weeding in the miniature golf area but otherwise very clean. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

This is a very good stopping point for us on the way from Wichita to Denver. The pull-through site for our RV was level and the hook-ups were easy. Keep in mind that this campground is on the high plains so don't expect anything but windy and more windy! The salt water pool was very refreshing and after 8pm it's for adults only. We were looking forward to eating crab cakes at the on-site pub but it is closed on Tuesday and Wednesday. The dog park is quite a distance from the camp and the path... Read More

It would be nice if they could put in a stone path. We would stop again for overnight.

Of course, you never have control over the weather, which was HOT HOT HOT. No shade of any kind, and the placement of the RVs/Trailers didn't help. The dog park provided doggy bags, but you had to walk over 100 yds to put them in the garbage - please provide a bucket for doggy bags! Restrooms were old, showing lots of wear, and not particularly clean - twice a day cleaning would brighten things up considerably. Lot of signs everywhere telling you what not to do. Good access to the interstate. The sites were clean and well-kept. It is close to the Colonial Steakhouse which was a good restaurant. The staff was helpful and had our info on the door after hours.

I would not recommend this place. The woman who is the owner was very rude. The campground is essentially a gravel parking lot. Upon arriving around 7:30 PM I walked into the main office to check in. We had given advance notice of our late arrival. She shoved an envelope at me and said nothing. I asked if this had everything we needed to know and I got a one word reply of, "Yep." We proceeded to our campsite. Before my husband had the chance to get out of the truck the owner was approaching us telling us we shouldn't drive through empty campsites. Which we had because the road and campsites look the same. It's all gravel and weeds. But we were aware of the hook ups and had plenty of room to drive to our campsite. The owner threatened to kick us out and sue us if we ever did it again. No joke! And she was raising her voice. We decided stay anyway because we had been on the road for 10 hours and it was a very desolate area in Kansas and we didn't want to drive another couple of hours. After we settled in I read the contents of the envelope. Page 3 had the rules, for which there were 10 and many of them in cap letters. (We broke rule #2). One of the rules informed us that there were security cameras everywhere and they were watching campers. In addition to the 10 Cardinal Rules, there were rules posted everywhere. Rules on top of garbage cans in the bathroom, posted on walls, pretty much every surface and a rule attached to it. This campground is like a gravel parking lot in the middle of the high plains. No trees, no grass, nada. Anything that was green was sticker weeds that stuck to our dogs feet and fur. The nicest thing I can say about this campground is that the wind carried the fresh scent of horse manure. Plan your trip so you won't have to stay at this campground.

I'd like to address your comments: First if you arrived at 7:30 pm since the office closes at 7 I met you in the alcove where I put the late arriving info on the door as I was closing. I did greet you and I must have asked your name so I could hand you the correct handout. I opened the handout and showed you where your site was and showed you the drawn out map to your site, which if you would have paid attention to there would have been no need for you to drive thru another site. I did greet you and I must have asked your name so I could hand you the correct handout. I opened the handout and showed you where your site was and showed you the drawn out map to your site, which if you would have paid attention to there would have been no need for you to drive thru another site. The correct way to handle your mistake would have been to keep on the road and circle back around. Also if you would have paid attention to one of the signs you thought we have too many of, you would have seen which way your site was as there is a large sign with site numbers and a directional arrows to tell you which way to go. In no campground are you allowed to drive thru other sites other than your own. Driving thru sites is how services get damaged, picnic tables are broken and the grass and trees we are trying to grow get destroyed. Luckily you didn't damage your rv or the parks services. As for threatening to kick you out and suing you. That never happened. When I corrected you about driving thru the sites, you became upset and I always offer to refund the nightly fee and help find another place to stay for anyone that is unhappy staying here. Whether they don't like the no smoking policy or they don't like to be informed of how the traffic flow goes in the park. I never raised my voice except to call out as you were driving thru the other site which was still 50 yards away from me as I came to stop you. As for the top 10 things you need to know when staying in my campground or any other. I wish we didn't have to hand out these common sense statements. But as you yourself drove thru a site this proves that everyone of them needs to be said as some people don't use common sense. The sorry fact is some people have to be told to put their trash in the dumpsters, to pick up after their pets, to keep their pet on a leash, to not open cable utility boxes and shown how to drive on roads. My roads are all rock most have a 10 foot wide grass strip the runs the length of the site. Only ten of them are mostly rock with some grass in them. Which you are calling weeds. This is North West Kansas and as any area has their particular weeds we have ours, we constantly spray to kill them but it is a delicate balance to not kill the grass, plants and trees you want and also do no harm to the wildlife which includes our campers pets. I'm sorry your dog got stickers on them but they need to be walked on the mowed areas of the park, which is about seven acres of grass spread out across the 15 acres the park sits on. As for your parting shot about the wind, as I said this is rural Northwest Kansas and I'm not going to apologize for the fact that the people around here raise beef and crops that put food on your table. They work hard around here for little thanks.

Fine for overnight stays. Easy access from the Internet, reasonable services in the immediate area for a middle of Kansas location. Large, clean restrooms. The park is a little rustic, but certainly adequate for a one night stay on the way down the road. Thanks for the cable TV - a nice plus as was the reasonably reliable wifi. For those that care, this is a completely non smoking park - nice for us but a problem for some, I suspect.

This park is okay for overnight. The restrooms were clean and well maintained. The park seems to cater to construction workers and it could be noisy for some people.

We stayed here one night on our way through the area. The gravel roads and grass sites made the area very dusty. The showerhouse was huge, very nice and clean, and nicely decorated. There is a restaurant onsite, Cap.n Jack's Pub. We ate dinner there, the atmosphere was pretty basic, and it was very hot inside (no a/c?). But the food was good, and it served us well. They have a pool, mini golf and some games. It was a good overnight stay.

Very nice staff. The pull-thru was easy and convenient. The spaces are gravel and a bit rutted. Good hookups. The area is open to the weather, and there was some pretty strong wind and rain squalls, but I think that is to be expected in Kansas in late summer.

thank you for your input. I have noted your comment about the ruts and strive to correct this every time it rains. As for the wind and rains up here in the high plains we'll take the rain anyway we can get it. Thank you for understanding.

Nice lady at front desk. She called me ahead of time and said 50 amp power for some reason and asked if 30 amp would be ok. No biggie weather was mild and didn't need that much power. Problem was it had been out for sometime and I felt this was a bait and switch. Electrical box was in disarray and 50 amp plug had been covered in duct tape for some time. Got in around dusk took my dog out to do his business. Walked in rig and realized I now had stickers all over the rig and in my dogs paws.... Read More

Got in around dusk took my dog out to do his business. Walked in rig and realized I now had stickers all over the rig and in my dogs paws. Took an hour to get them out of rugs and carpet. At 630 this am was awakened by a parked dump truck warming his engine. Lots of road or construction crews. Basically a no frills stop for one night. Not much in Oakley Owners need to do something about stickers. Real bad and next to impossible to keep out of rig.

Just a comment to this review: I'm sorry you weren't happy with the site. I called you that morning to inform you that the 50 amp site you had been assigned to for your 40 foot MH and tow was no longer available. It was not the site you were put in. A previous MH had damaged the site you were to be in and there were no other 50 amp sites available large enough to accommodate your rig and tow. I offered you the choice of a refund or a 30 amp site long enough so you didn't need to unhook. You chose... Read More

As for the stickers, which are prevalent throughout the midwest, all I can say is I'm sorry you had a bad time with them but as we spray daily for them through the season and other than kill all the vegetation on the 15 acres making it a dust bowl we just try to manage it the best we can. Again I'm sorry you got some in you rig. Lastly, here in the rural mid-west anytime there is work like road maintenance, electrical line repair and replacement or pipe line work to be done the skilled labor has to be brought it from other parts of the country. They often bring their RV's so they have someplace to live while they provide a much needed service to the area as well as earn a paycheck for their families. I'm sorry you were disturb by one of the workers leaving for work on that Friday morning.

Lots of birdsong drowned out the noise of the highway and in the morning lots of little white flowers. Convenient, friendly fast and cheap.

Dog... Read More
