St Johnsville Campsite & Marina (City Park) isn't for everyone. Its a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde experience. Facing the Erie Canal this is a beautiful park. There is a nice gazebo and the views are very pretty. There is a large grassy area to enjoy along the banks. However, opposite of the canal, to the back of the park, is the city's small DPW operation and a three lane rail road. The rail road is very busy - several trains will come by both day and night. However, opposite of the canal, to the back of the park, is the city's small DPW operation and a three lane rail road. The rail road is very busy - several trains will come by both day and night. Most are large freight trains, some are Amtrak passenger trains. This is either a huge turn off or an awesome attraction, depending on your thoughts of train watching. Half our family LOVES trains, so this was an unexpected bonus for us.
As far as the park itself, if you have a large rig, some of the roads in off of I-90 will be a little tight. Once you are in the park, the maneuvering is easy and the sites are big enough. Pay close attention to the sewer connection, it is in an odd location at the back of the site, so we had to unhook our toad even though the pull through site was long enough to accommodate the coach and the truck. Or, if you have 30 feet of sewer hose you might be okay. The park is in need of repair (picnic tables, for example, are falling apart), but there is a new Harbor Master (who operates the park) and he is working on it an making progress. In summary, if you need a fairly convenient stop on I-90 (there isn't many for big rigs) and don't mind some trains - this is a good stop for a night or two. Also, get a pizza delivered from Lombardo's - it was incredible.
