Camp Hither Hills: Excellent Access to Ottawa
Ottawa, Canada’s capitol. Visit impressive national sites, world heritage sites, famous landmarks, world-class museums, priceless art galleries, enjoy culinary delights and more. Something for everyone! Service bilingue.
I've been a full-timer for 33 years and have stayed seasonally at the Hither Hills RV Park for many of those years. Mike, the manager, has always been helpful, friendly, and professional. I read a particularly negative review of the park recently and am truly mystified as to what RV park they were reviewing! I trust Good Sam's RV park ratings and Hither Hills deserves a top-notch status. Sadly, many in the RV world today aren't true RV'ers but are merely negativities on wheels. I strongly recommend... Once again, Hither Hills is our base camp for the month of October! The sites are large, the services meet all expectations, and the staff are friendly. The location is perfect for access to family and everything we want to explore in Ottawa/Gatineau. They did a great job on the trails at the back of the property! Also, the continued expansion of retail services nearby means even more choices, for almost everything. There are also 2 reputable RV dealers/service centers within 10 minutes, which proved... The ratings of this campsite will never make me trust another Good Sam rating. I researched this camp ground and others in the Ottawa area off of Good Sams ratings. I booked this campsite mainly for the proximity to Ottawa, the dog park (which is advertised on their webpage) and the good sam rating. As there were no current reviews, I could only hope that things had improved from past posts. This was sadly not the case. I even went as far as researching how Good Sam awards their rating, and... I even went as far as researching how Good Sam awards their rating, and I honestly couldn't even figure out how they are approved by Good Sam at all. Here is my review, yes it had a pretty decent heated pool, the playground was smaller than what is in my backyard and consisted of broken slides which looks like they were found on the side of the road and an old tractor tire. It did have a soccer field but I couldn't tell if the volleyball area was communal or a part of someone's site. We stayed on a 30/50 amp big rig site which was advertised as *all* having a fire pit. We did not have one. In fact, only about 2/3rd of these sites have one. We noticed before we unhitched, and I went and questioned it. We were told to use the site behind us because it is never used. We bought wood from the campground and then went out for dinner. When we got home after the office hours were closed, someone had been placed on that site (even though there were numerous other sites available) for the night. No fire for us that evening. WIFI is pretty much non-existent. We were placed between two different WIFI towers and couldn't get a signal. I stood beside each other and couldn't get a signal. Only place you could find it was at the office or by the washrooms. Now the dog park. Oi....This was not a dog park, nor a dog run. This was a 15 x 10 rent-a-fence enclosed area, even the smallest of dogs couldn't run in this enclosure and get tired. My front porch is bigger than this enclosure, there is no way this is a dog park. And to get to the so called dog park you had to walk through other camp sites/dedicated tenting sites. There was no way to get to it otherwise. Never once did we see a nature trail, we saw lots of back roads that had construction equipment/debris on it, but no where that I would want to walk with my kids/dogs. There was no Rec Hall. Well the park map says it is there, but it is filled with construction tools and supplies. There is no emergency phone. It too is marked on the map, but there is no phone there. There was posted office hours, but it would close periodically throughout the day. We went up twice and it was closed during the posted office hours. We didn't use the showers, but the bathrooms were decent. Typically campground bathrooms in my opinion. I usually just let a bad campground go, with the promise of never to return, but this camp ground is so grossly misrepresented, I couldn't let it go.

As always, I refer to the Goodsam website before booking a getaway and I always aim for those high scores, 10-10-10 when I can or at least something very close to that. When we arrived at Camp Hitherhills, we were greeted by a very nice gentleman who escorted us to our site and even guided me as I was parking my rig. Our site was very long, which is nice. I must say that this campground is far from being anything close to a 10-10-10. It barely gets a pass in my book - messy environment, old scrapped... Read More

It barely gets a pass in my book - messy environment, old scrapped car at one end, dumpster set right next to the main path, consistant sewer smells - enough so that we could not sit out and enjoy a beautiful evening...and it was not the case of a neighbour being badly hooked-up, noisy environment being situated next to an industrial area of which a quarry. As a matter of fact, many of the tenants were not vacationers but rather workers who had set-up camp there... COVID-19 cannot be held responsible for this environment which in my opinion has been neglected for years. I can see that the ownership is investing in cement pads but the efforts cannot stop there. If you go to Ottawa and wish to enjoy a quaint camping environment, I suggest you read other reviews first. I was sadly misguided by the high scores Goodsam gave this Campground.

ANOTHER great stay at Hither Hills. Absolutely the best location for a big rig, close to Ottawa. This has been our home-base when in Ottawa (2 or 3 times a year). Close to the city, restaurants, highways and even a casino. We will be back again in 2020!!
Thank you for your kind review. We look forward to your next visit. Terry & Mike
Nice location in the rural area just 15 minutes from downtown Ottawa. The park, however, has very little in the way of working amenities. They advertise wifi, but it does not work. The water pressure was so low that we had to use our internal water pump. The sites are gravel and a mix of back in and pull through. Our site was a pull through and was very long but narrow. See our updates, full reviews and pictures at our blog at thegilliamsisland.
We are sorry that some things were not up to your expectations. We did have low water pressure for a short time until we were able to repair a leak. Your site was narrow because the gentleman to your right parked on your lot instead of on his site. He had room to park in front of or behind his trailer. These Pull-Thru sites are about 100 feet long so there is no need to park on someone else's site. Terry & Mike
This park is best suited to those looking to disconnect in a quiet, mostly adult park. While the facilities will be considered Spartan by families it has definite appeal to those looking for peace and quiet. While families are welcome, there are few facilities for children. There is no pool (at least we didn't see one) and no playground. The 'good' - clean, quiet, level, large, grassy sites with lots of trees and greenery. Friendly host ! The 'good' - clean, quiet, level, large, grassy sites with lots of trees and greenery. Friendly host !
The 'bad' - not many facilities for children, however, well- suited for adults.
The 'ugly' - internet, like in many parks is slow and can be spotty no cable TV although there are some local stations that can be picked up using an aerial.
In summary, a comfortable place to disconnect and just kick back and relax.

Thank you for your kind review. We are working on improving the WiFi. Terry & Mike
Very nice quiet place. Extremely friendly staff! Seems like the new owners are still renovating the place. Only reason I didn't give a 5 star rating is simply because there is nothing on site (no store in case a need arises)
Thank you for your kind review. We do not have a store as there are two shopping centres within 2 km of the campground. Terry & Sid
Park was OK. The location was good for going downtown and shopping for food and drugstores. Really has nothing else going for it. Needs tiding up.
The Pull thru sites are nowhere near level which led to us having the front wheels off the ground. Problems with the wifi the first night which got fixed the next day, and a frequent sewer smell could not find where it was coming from. This park is surrounded by a gravel company so did have some equipment noise. Probably would not stay again even though it is a good way to get in and out of Ottawa.
Thank you for your comments. We did find the source of the smell, just a cap not properly secured and damaged...now replaced.
We almost overlooked this Gem...The owners were very helpful getting us set-up on our pull-through site with shade and a view of the sunset. We needed the site for a prolonged stay that was convenient to the heart of Ottawa and found downtown was only 15 to 20 minutes. Very close to all amenities, banks, groceries. drug store, CTC, Tim Hortons, McDonalds and one light further all fuels including 2 types of propane very accessable for big rigs. Rideau Carleton raceway near by. We saw many improvements... Read More

Thank you!
This campground is very close to Ottawa & is a pretty easy commute. The road to the campground is in terrible shape but obviously not the fault of the campground. The park is old with old run down barns on the property. The spots are spacious but the grass area is uneven & ankle turning. Needed to use blocks to fill in the holes. The pull thru sites are sloped & require extra levelling but the worst part was the lady at the desk. She was rude & unfriendly. Would not go back there except that it... Read More

The place has to many faults: Part of the campground serves as a deposit for materials and heavy equipment and is full of garbage and leftovers of constructions. It has several barns full of trash. Having the appeal of a junk yard. The green areas are very overgrown, they don't cut the grass often enough, and the crap Appel orchids are abandoned, and therefore with garbage from previous campers that seems that just accumulated there over time. There are piles of gravel, sand, debris and soil, all over the place.
There a lot of surrounding noise from the road and it is located within an industrial area.
I wife went to walk the cat last night and on her walk the cat cut a mouse even though she walks the cat on a leash.
The best thing this campground has to offer is easy to find if you are visiting Ottowa, since bank street will put you in downtown directly with zero difficulty as well as for shopping for foods, Walmart, Canadian Tire, banks, restaurants, etc.
Mostly all the things that are not well in the campground is to a poor management, I write in hope that they do something about it, so other camper have in the future a better experience than mine. Thanks.

Thank you for your comments as it helps us address issues. The materials mentioned were not on campground property but were being stored for use on the new premium sites to be installed at the back of the campground. These sites are now completed and look marvelous as per our Good Sam inspectors. The barns full of trash refer to a barn that was off limits to campers as it is where our recyclables are kept. These materials are only picked up biweekly and do need to be stored.
This campground is conveniently situated at the south end of Ottawa on a major road that leads to the downtown core. It has acceptable grass back-in sites and some pull-throughs, and certainly has potential. But overall, I feel that the current Good Sam rating is significantly overstated. There is highway noise at times, the showers are poor (bad ventilation, phone booth sized stalls, sloped floors that don't drain properly so you are standing in a pool of stagnant water). The laundry is in a shabby... Read More

There is highway noise at times, the showers are poor (bad ventilation, phone booth sized stalls, sloped floors that don't drain properly so you are standing in a pool of stagnant water). The laundry is in a shabby looking building; it was also expensive and had a burned out ceiling light. We reported this and the owner's reply was "he doesn't want people doing their laundry in the evening anyway". The light never was repaired in the time we were there (several days). From our time of arrival until our departure the owner seemed tired, unhappy and uninterested in any improvement suggestions. Unfortunately, based on the above comments, we would not return to this campground any time soon.

Thank you for your comments on your stay this summer at Camp Hither Hills. It sounds like your stay was not as enjoyable as we would have liked it to be. Showers have been sloped to deal with the water issue and longer shower curtains are now in place. Extra hooks have been installed.. Ventilation fan has been replaced and now runs continuously Again thank you for your comments as they allow us to address your concerns and help us to continue to improve our park for you and others.
My husband & I were very disappointed in the showers. There were several issues which confirmed for us that the Good Sam ratings (which are usually more accurate) were deceiving. There was absolutely no ventilation, no place in the shower stall itself to set one's shampoo/conditioner or soap except on the floor. There was only 1 hook to hang towel & clothing & in one of the showers the hook was broken off. There was a very small shelf which was inadequate to place toiletry bag/container etc. No... Read More

There was only 1 hook to hang towel & clothing & in one of the showers the hook was broken off. There was a very small shelf which was inadequate to place toiletry bag/container etc. No waste basket & the shower curtain, which normally provides a barrier to prevent the water from showering into the area where towel/clothing is, was not wide enough to fully cover the area separating the bathing area from the changing area. Very confined space & lastly, we have been on the road for nearly 3 weeks staying in other campgrounds & never once paid for shower facilities. The other inconvenience was that the bathrooms which are located in another area altogether were also not ventilated, short of propping the main entry door open with the concrete brick which lay on the floor. Also no reasonable surfaces available for setting one's toiletries down while washing hands. Very frustrating.

Thank you for your review as it allows us to focus on important issues. The ventilation problem has been fixed by replacing a breaker that controlled the ventilating fan for the building. All showers have a large seat, shelf, hook, soap dispenser and sanitary napkin disposal bin. We have replaced some narrow shower curtains with larger ones. There is a shelf for each sink in the toilet area. Hopefully you will return to view the improvements. Terry
