Tenting Sites
It was easy to find the park and maneuver around in the park. Sites are gravel and dirt (or mud if it has rained) but level. The hook-ups are at the front of the site, not the rear as most are. Our sewer hose couldn't reach so we had pull forward into the road before we left to dump our tanks. The park is close to an active train track, which runs all night, and an airport, which we never heard. The bathhouse was very clean and air conditioned, with separate shower rooms. I got a reservation 3 months ahead of arrival for a full hook up space. When I arrived my overnight stay was $54 for a water and electric space. I complained and got a $13.50 credit. This park is way over priced. You are next to the airport, rail road tracks and busy highway. Thank goodness I brought a white noise machine.
We stayed 2 nights in the Amarillo KOA. I provide the following review: 1) I gave an overall rating of 5 stars because while the park isn't beautiful or scenic in the traditional sense, it is situated really well insofar as sightseeing, ease of access and the park atmosphere in general. 2) Facility rating is 4 stars but I should have probably given 5 stars. The KOA can't help that the region is in drought status and has been for a long time. Most all the vegetation and landscaping were dead/dormant when we were there. I could see where flowers will be planted once spring finally comes. The grass looked really, really dead, but again, it may just be dormant as a result of the drought. 3) Restroom rating is a 10+. The restrooms have been remodeled recently and were FABULOUSLY clean. No complaints whatsoever. The showers had strong water pressure, plenty of hot water and were spotlessly clean. Yay!! 4) Appeal rating is 4 stars simply because the landscaping looked so tired. But again, that is not the fault of the KOA since the region is in a drought status. We took a day to sightsee and went to the Alibate Flint Quarries National Monument where we took a ranger guided tour out to the quarries. We then went the opposite direction over to the Palo Duro Canyon State Park where we took a guided horseback riding tour in the bottom of the canyon. After returning to the KOA, we had a limo pick us up (for free) and take us to The Big Texan Steak House for a kitschy, fun but good dinner. The limo then returned us to the KOA for free (we tipped both drivers). The restaurant is about 6 minutes from the KOA and it was just all really fun. There were many, many other sightseeing things to do in Amarillo but we did not have enough time. That being said, we would definitely stay here again. The "bad" things about this KOA: it is near a very active rail line so there were train whistles blowing pretty regularly 24 hours a day. This may or may to bother some people. The KOA also backs up to 2 small airports. There were planes coming/going during the day ONLY. I did notice some traffic noise early in the mornings when people were going to work on the state route that is close to the KOA. So, if noise bothers you, this may not be the best park for you. If you are not bothered by noise and want to be close to Amarillo, this is a great RV park to stay in.
